Do you need an ashtray for cigars?

There is an art to ashing cigars. While you don’t need to flick off the ashen end as often as you would a cigarette, you still need to discard the burnt-up ends so you can continue smoking without getting covered in pieces of tobacco. 

When ashing a cigar, simply rest the cigar against the side of the ashtray and gently tap to release the loose ash. Make sure you wait until the ash is at least an inch long, though, or you run the risk of knocking off the ember and needing to relight. If you aren’t quite ready to tap to ash or aren’t confident in your ability to apply the right amount of pressure, you can start by gently pressing the edge of the cigar against the ashtray and rolling it to ease the ash off in a slower motion.
