Recently, a discussion came up with a client who was getting quotes for a big cigar locker job for a club in Houston, Texas. We as always quoted lockers with 100% Spanish Cedar wood and they got another quote for Mahogany wood with Cedar lining inside. The price difference was a lot. Our quote was considerably lower than the other company. The reason for that was not the wood but the company we are competing again as they are known for over priced products but anyways that is not the point here.
Client was very confused. Why use Spanish Cedar, why is your quote so low, why, why, why….
Well, here was my response to one of the very important questions:
Client: Why do you use all Spanish Cedar instead of Mahogany, which is what the other manufacturer is quoting? If we want Mahogany doors is that an option and would that be recommended?
Me: Everyone in the cigar industry uses Spanish Cedar, because if it's properties. It has a bitter taste and keeps bugs away, it enhances the flavor of the cigars and it helps maintain the humidity level of the humidor while the humidification is not running. Many companies don't use Spanish cedar because they don't make their doors or don't have access to it. How you know that is if you ask them to make the unit in Spanish Cedar they won't but we will make it in Spanish Cedar or Mahogany whatever you want. As a cigar aficionado we recommend Spanish cedar as the first choice.
Client: Is there any visible differences in the exterior “color” for lack of a better word for using Spanish Cedar on the doors and matching to existing wood in a bar or lounge?
Me: Spanish cedar and Mahogany are from the same family, in fact the grain is almost identical and you couldn't tell if it wasn't for the smell, it’s a little lighter when its first processed but it works great with most stain colors. If you are concerned about the final color, we can use any sample given to us and we can match it as close as possible. We can even provide a sample for approval before we do any finishing.
